Name: Christina aka Tegan N. Scare-ya aka YaYa
Occupation: Bike Product & Sales Enthusiast at Western Bikeworks and academic on hiatus
Previous bike experience and history: My previous bike experience has involved tearing up the streets of West Salem as a child and teenager in search of freedom and solitude, and then later exploring the outer reaches of North Portland during college. While I was in graduate school in the Twin Cities I had the opportunity to start working directly with bikes at Omnium Bike Shop in St. Paul, which ignited my love for single speed/fixed gear track bikes. Now that I’m finally not busy with grad school, I’m ready to race!
What do you do for fun? I play roller derby for the Rose City Rollers, work to dismantle the capitalist/white/cis/heteropatriarchy, obsess over Scandinavian crime fiction, and lift heavy things at CrossFit.
What does it mean to you to be on a WTF team here in Portland? To me, being on a WTF team in Portland means finally having the opportunity to pursue my passion for racing without having to compromise any aspect of my identity to fit in. It’s no secret that the cycling world is overwhelmingly dominated by cis men and more often than not, WTF cyclists are asked to conform to standards that do not take into account this imbalance of power in order to be accepted or even considered “legitimate.” I’m proud to be a part of a team that wants to subvert this paradigm and envision new ways for empowerment through cycling!
Goals for the season: I’m excited to get my pedals underneath me, keep up with this amazing crew, and spread the love of WTF cycling!
Something random about you: I got my master’s degree in German last August and I’m currently using it to expand my cycling vocabulary with the German translations on Park Tools packaging.
