(this battlekat has not signed up for the 2k19 season, yet)

After a mainly teamless 2018 year, of alleycat and goldsprint hosting- battlekat has a new mission - to throw more races and also to help waive new to track Cat 4/5 F/T/W rider race fees for Thursday and/or Friday night track for all of the 2019 season.

Lets see how this works out *fingers crossed* :)

2017 - Track is Here!!

After all the waiting, speculating, and dances to make the rain go away- Track season is finally here! After a beautiful turn out for the Women's Track Clinic hosted by OBRA,  and maybe a couple more Wedensday night developmental classed- the BATTLEKATs are rolling! Here is what some of them had to say about track so far:
"The thing that stands out to me is how supportive folks are and how there's a great community for new racers. I was terrrrifieddddd at the women's track clinic   to get on the track for the first time, but everyone cheered for each other and were so posi. At events each week it's mostly the same group of folks and you all get to know each other and support each other. Jen and all of the instructors are so amazing, knowledgeable and encouraging!" - Dora

"I have been so impressed by how supportive the track racing community is of new riders. People really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and safe on the track. I gained a lot of confidence by going to Wednesday night clinics and highly recommend them to all beginners. Honestly, the feeling of riding on the track is addictive, it keeps you coming back! There’s nothing like centrifugal force to get your adrenaline running!" - Molly

"I feel a lot of addictive adrenaline going around the track. Different from the adrenaline I’ve felt in any other cycling disciplines. Its like you are defeating gravity. I’ve been sad each time I’ve gone to the track and its time to leave! The community is positive and welcoming and I really look forward to getting more experienced in this sport.

The fact that you don’t actually steer left to go left around the turns still blows my mind…" - Sharon

Kaya's Evolution into TrackĀ

By: Kaya Lydamore

Once upon a time… I was running with the cars on my Specialized Dolce, about to miss my turn, in a hurry I veered right - but as I cut through the gas station parking lot, I realized that I was moving too fast and slowing too little to make the turn so as I slammed on the breaks. As I laid my bike down, skidding into the curb coming up, ripping off a lot of skin and paint from my bike, I realized that road-bike was too fast for me. I was full of youthful vigor and  too mindless for the abilities of my bike, I needed to switch from automatic to manual bicycling.

When I started to ride a fixed gear, five years ago in Florida, all I wanted was to be able to keep up with the boys that I knew, and to track stand. Racing in an alleycat was an event reserved for the really good bike messengers and the cool crowd, racing track wasn’t even on my radar. Eventually, I could keep up with the boys on my worst days, and got my time to race in Alleycats. To me, this was where the fun was at: a grungy, beer infused competition for word of mouth glory and maybe a couple bucks. #FIXIELIFE

I moved to Portland, grew up a little, but still raged on my fixie, still racing in Alleycats when I could. Through a friend Will who goes by "The Mayor", an established Portland bike messenger & thrower of Alleycats, I got connected with a recent Minneapolis transplant Rachel Zaidman, who was starting up an all women’s developmental track team- BATTLEKAT. Although Rachel made her way back to Minneapolis, the team came together as organically as I could imagine. All of us were super into bikes, but in our different ways.

At the time I thought the coming together of the team was slow, we were about 4 months out from track season, trying to secure sponsors- and everything felt pretty disorganized. In retrospect, we were hella productive in those first few months, and got some great sponsors despite not having much to show for BATTLEKAT at the time.

As soon as there was a dry day in Portland, I went out to the alpenrose Velodrome and threw my conversion with straight bars in the track. I was on the wrong bike, and had no real idea what I was doing. All I knew was that  IT WAS SO MUCH FUN and the right kind of scary. I was hooked, and without any real guidance I started what I could put together as training: a pretty solid regiment of squats, deadlifts and core strengthening. Pre-season I had a lot of time to be excited, and couldn’t wait for a dry day to go ride in the Alpenrose Velodrome.

Around the start of the season there was a Women’s Developmental Track day, where I learned a lot about riding in a group, and the basics of track riding. In the beginning- going in and out of the turns was exhilarating, pace-lining other people was terrifying, and everyone else seemed so good. Unlike most of my bike experiences in Portland, everyone at the track was so open, forward and helpful. I felt like the existing crowd was open and supportive of new-comers, and they rooted us BATTLEKAT ladies on from the start.

I had read so much in to what and Omnium was, the types of races, different strategies. None of the Track jargon stuck in my mind until I experienced those events and races.  Track turned out to be a lot more fun than I was expecting, and I think that says a lot. It feels like a team and individual sport wrapped into one. I really look forward to next season as we all have gotten a little experience under our belts, and we can practice working more as a team, riding together and pushing each other to be better. I feel really lucky because we have had so much support within the team.

Its wild to me that there aren’t more women willing and wanting to get out there and ride in the velodrome. I can understand that it seems scary from the outside, but I encourage anyone remotely interested to go out and try it. Im sure that most velodromes offer a track development class, and sometimes even rental bikes. Hugely rewarding, a ton of fun, and a personal accomplishment- that I will always be proud of.

Mid-season Update!

I can't believe that it's already June! We've got a few months of racing under our belts so I though it would be a good time to update you all on how things are going. Before the season started I looked back at last year's track results/participation. In Portland we have two weeknight races every week and a handful of weekend omnium events. Last year there were three Fridays where there were enough novice women for a field. The number of participants? 2-3. This year we're averaging 5 women for weeknight racing and 8 for weekend omniums with our biggest field happening last weekend when the temperature was over 100. We had 9 novice women that day! I'm happy with where we're at this season and hopeful that we can grow these numbers for next year!! Thanks to Daniel Steinle for the picture. Tears of Joy

I was almost in tears in the grocery store parking lot this afternoon. Today was the women's clinic at Alpenrose Velodrome. The turnout was amazing and there were a lot of new faces. Every single woman got up on the track and rocked it. There were so many smiles and introductions and plans to come back out. It's all that could be hoped for. There's also been so much love, excitement, and encouragement from experienced and new racers alike. Then I got an email that our Go Fund Me campaign reached it's goal. Someone saw the pictures from today's event and donated $700. Floored. When people can see how important it is to elevate women's athletics, I know we're doing something right. A million thanks to everyone that has helped us in this short amount of time. It means the world to me and the team.

Tracking is here!! Last weekend we headed out to Alpenrose to help with the annual track cleanup.
Picture
Tomorrow, April 26th will be the first beginners clinic and Sunday May 1st is the women's clinic. No experience necessary and there are rental bikes available for $5. Bring a helmet and pedals if you'd like to use something other than cages and straps. These clinics are a fun a supportive way to give track riding/racing a try!
Racing starts next week with weekly races every Thursday and Friday night with omnium racing for category 4/5 women on both nights. We asked and the folks at BriHOP have added Women's 4/5 races to their omnium happening the May 7th and 8th!!
For details on everything head on over to http://obra.org/
We can't wait to see you out at the track and please come say hi!!

Why are we here?

I don't mean that in an existential way, but in a why a WTF track focused team? I'll start with my personal experience. I did a handful of races many years ago after building up a race specific bike and then put the bike away. I got to a point where I decided I either needed to race the damn thing or sell it. So I went to the women's clinic out at Alpenrose. There was a great turnout- I saw some new faces and some ladies I've met via road and cross racing. That seemed promising so I was excited to get out and try some racing. I was still pretty nervous about it and it's a bit of a drive for me to get out to the velodrome but I went. I swear half of getting started racing is getting over the nerves and just showing up. I got out there hoping to see some of the ladies from our clinic but there were no 4/5 women at all. I was told I could race with the novice men which didn't sound appealing. From what I can tell, this was the same thing that a number of other women from the clinic experienced. You get the courage to go try something new and can't, there's a good chance you won't try again.

So that's where BATTLEKAT comes in! Out goal is to have women at all the weeknight racing so there is always a 4/5 field. We also hope to be a welcoming presence to anyone new to track racing. Come find us, say hi and ask questions!
